Maker - Sandra Bowkett
Sandra Bowkett lives and works in Tungurung country, Victoria. These planters have been fired in her bourry box wood firing kiln. She has about 5 firings a year between April and late November, that is, not during the bush fire season. Every firing is different and a continuing learning experience. The kiln is fired with fallen timber and bark found on her property.
She is interested in utilising the individual qualities of a variety of clays as well as adding earth materials to these clays such as local granitic sands and rusts which adds a connection of place to her work. She often decorates the planters with elemental designs in coloured slips (liquid clay) or metal oxides. Sometimes the pieces are partially glazed however it is the impact of flame and ash from the fuel that gives each planter their uniqueness.
